Peru prepares for El Niño impacts on economy and climate

Peru is preparing for the potential impacts of the El Niño phenomenon during 2026 and 2027. Economic forecasts from Macroconsult and the Peruvian Institute of Economy suggest the national economy could grow by 3.3% to 3.4% in 2026, with the construction and service sectors expected to offset losses in agriculture, fishing, and manufacturing.

To mitigate climate risks, the Ministry of Economy and Finance has authorized a transfer of S/205.26 million to the Ministry of Transport and Communications for preparation and response efforts. President Keiko Fujimori is reportedly leading a national mobilization involving government, subnational, and private sectors to address the anticipated devastation.

Environmental experts warn that the phenomenon could also extend the forest fire season in Peru to six months in 2027 due to high temperatures and vegetation drying. While some regions face intense rainfall and flooding, others may suffer from water deficits that increase fire risks.
