Peru opposition denounces prosecutor's case as political persecution

Peruvian prosecutors filed criminal complaints against a group of opposition leaders, teachers, journalists and activists from the Puno region, accusing them of disturbing public order. The accused—including communicator Claudia Cisneros, internet host Pavel Yábar and former health minister Hernando Cevallos—argue the charges constitute a political crackdown aimed at silencing dissent and are part of a "modus operandi" of Fujimorism.

Presidential candidate Roberto Sánchez of Juntos por el Perú said the case criminalises peaceful protest over the runoff between him and Keiko Fujimori, urging the interior ministry to protect demonstrators. The accused allege threats, intimidation, a suspected kidnapping and a hacking incident targeting their communications. They claim the prosecution seeks to intimidate critics and undermine democratic expression ahead of the election.

The controversy highlights deepening political polarization in Peru as the country approaches its presidential runoff, raising concerns over freedom of expression and the right to assemble.
