Peru opposition presses Keiko Fujimori to allow Betssy Chávez’s asylum exit

Jorge Nieto, leader of the Partido del Buen Gobierno, said a future administration headed by Keiko Fujimori should issue a salvoconduct that enables former cabinet minister Betssy Chávez to leave Peru for Mexico, where she has been granted diplomatic asylum. Nieto argued that Peru is failing its international obligations on the right of asylum and that there is no reason to block her departure.

Nieto also criticized the current political dynamic, describing the continuity of the Fujimori dynasty and the lack of genuine opposition in Congress as an extension of an authoritarian model. He claimed that real reconciliation must start at the social level and not rely on a controlled opposition that merely endorses the executive’s policies.
