Peru police raid busts 'La Red del Silencio' extortion ring

In a coordinated operation by the Fiscalía contra la Criminalidad Organizada del Callao and police forces, 25 suspected members of the criminal network known as “La Red del Silencio” were arrested. The raid covered 21 properties across Callao, Los Olivos, San Martín de Porres, Chorrillos, Surquillo, Puente Piedra and a cell within Lurigancho prison.

The group is accused of extorting more than 190 public‑transport vehicles in Lima and Callao, demanding daily payments ranging from S/10 to S/40 and, in some cases, up to S/70 per unit. Threats, armed attacks and intimidation were reportedly used to enforce payments. Companies such as Translima and Holding Real Express S.A., as well as independent drivers and conductors, were among the victims. The detainees were placed under a 15‑day preliminary detention while investigations continue.

Authorities seized communications tools, including WhatsApp groups and phone numbers, used to send extortion messages and threats. The operation aims to dismantle the extortion scheme that has terrorised transport operators for years.
