Peru President Keiko Fujimori pushes metro projects and road upgrades

President Keiko Fujimori, in her first Message to the Nation, outlined a major infrastructure agenda that includes completing the Nueva Carretera Central, launching lines 3‑6 of the Lima‑Callao metro, and starting metro systems in Arequipa, Piura and Trujillo. The plan also adds several highway projects such as the Oyón‑Ambo and Longitudinal de la Sierra routes, aimed at improving passenger and freight connectivity nationwide.

Following the president’s announcement, economist Francisco Huerta Benites urged the creation of a “Comisión Prometro de Trujillo” to fast‑track a Trujillo metro. He stressed the need to embed the project in the Ministry of Transport and Communications’ multi‑annual investment plan, estimate a cost above 5 billion soles, and launch an international tender by 2029 with construction to begin around 2030. The proposal emphasizes the metro’s potential to serve over one million riders and support Trujillo’s rapid urban growth.
