Keiko Fujimori unveils anti‑crime agenda after assuming Peru presidency

Keiko Fujimori took office on 28 July 2024 and announced a package of measures aimed at combating crime, creating jobs, preparing for the El Niño phenomenon and reviving infrastructure projects. Together with Prime Minister Luis Galarreta, she discussed a decree to request legislative delegation so the executive can adopt anti‑crime norms more quickly, and outlined reforms to the National Penitentiary System, including new high‑capacity prisons modeled on El Salvador and protection for magistrates handling organized‑crime cases.

The government also plans to expand the role of the Armed Forces in security operations, especially in emergency zones, while keeping the National Police involved. Proposals include building additional prisons and granting the military temporary operational leadership in certain areas.

Kenji Fujimori, the president’s brother and former congressman, did not attend the inauguration because a court‑imposed sentence for the “Mamanivideos” influence‑peddling case bars him from political events. His wife confirmed the 4‑year‑6‑month prison term and a civil reparations order.

In early August, Keiko visited the Junín region after a recent earthquake, meeting victims and promising to direct aid caravans for those affected by the disaster and the upcoming El Niño. Critics noted police blockades that limited access for local community leaders.
