Peru promotes domestic avocado consumption amid rising production

Peru is intensifying efforts to promote domestic avocado consumption in observance of National Peruvian Avocado Day. The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), in collaboration with Agromercado and the Association of Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters of Peru (ProHass), has launched a simultaneous promotional campaign across the regions of Ancash, Lima, Ica, and Ayacucho.

National consumption has reached approximately 2.99 kilograms per person annually as of 2024. The country has seen significant growth in the sector, with production reaching 1,227,819 tons in 2025, a 35% increase compared to 2023. Peru currently holds the position of the world's second-largest avocado exporter.

The industry is heavily supported by small-scale farmers; of the 28,000 Hass avocado producers in Peru, 97% are smallholders managing less than five hectares. These producers play a strategic role in supplying both the domestic market and international agro-industries.
