South American agricultural and mining export trends

Overview

Peru and Chile continue to see significant developments in their agricultural and mining export sectors. In Chile, fruit exports reached approximately US$8,000 million by late July, supported by avocado production hitting a 15-year high of 265,000 tons. This growth is attributed to improved productivity, with the industry anticipating a further record of 285,000 tons during the 2026-2027 season. In Peru, the avocado industry is transitioning from explosive volume growth toward a focus on profitability. While export volumes have increased more than eightfold since 2017, the 2026 campaign shows the value per kilogram rising faster than volume. By the third week of June, Peru exported 532,000 tons valued at US$1,037 million, representing a 4.6% increase in volume and an 11.1% increase in value compared to the same period in 2025. Projections for the end of 2026 suggest historical highs of approximately 920,000 tons and US$1,825 million. Recent developments in the Hass avocado sector indicate that exports to Europe are reaching historic volumes, despite challenges such as high global supply and downward pressure on prices. To address these pressures, companies are investing in technical training for small-scale producers. In the Chuquitambo region of Pataz, an alliance between Danper and Compañía Minera Poderosa is working to enhance the competitiveness of local growers by preparing them for GLOBALG.A.P. certification. These technical improvements include installing weather stations and adopting systematic field management to meet international standards for food safety and traceability. Peruvian regional exports remain concentrated in mining-intensive areas. Five regions—Arequipa, Ica, Áncash, Puno, and Moquegua—accounted for 57.4% of total interior exports, totaling US$43,771 million. Arequipa led these exports with US$5.66 billion, primarily through copper, gold, and lead.
