Peru protects Markapuchungo and Chahuillo archaeological sites

Peru's Ministry of Culture has issued provisional protection orders for two archaeological sites located in the Apurímac and Junín regions. The protection is set for a period of two years, though this may be extended to three years if the rights of indigenous peoples are directly affected.

In Apurímac, the Markapuchungo site in the Cotabambas province is facing threats from potato plantation farming, informal housing growth, and livestock grazing. In Junín, the Chahuillo archaeological landscape in Sapallanga is being impacted by human activity, including the construction of fences, land sales, and the use of heavy machinery for earth removal.
