Peru receives multiple Green Awards for water and climate initiatives

Peru has secured three categories at the 2026 Green Awards, recognizing national initiatives in water security, tourism management, and climate risk adaptation.

The AQUARESTAURA project, led by Aquafondo, received the Sweet Water award for its work in rehabilitating ancestral amunas, or stone canals, to infiltrate rainwater into watersheds. This project has rehabilitated 79 kilometers of canals, resulting in an annual water recharge of 13 million cubic meters and the restoration of over 3,900 hectares of high Andean ecosystems.

In the tourism sector, The Extraordinary Story of Machu Picchu, coordinated by Green Initiative, won the Resilient Cities and Communities award. The project reported an 18.77% reduction in emissions and maintains its status as a carbon-neutral destination through waste management, electric mobility, and ecological restoration.

Additionally, Financiera Confianza was recognized in the Finance category for its green microfinance solutions aimed at helping small rural producers adapt to climate risks.

Separately, Newmont Yanacocha was granted the 2026 Water Responsible Company Seal by Aquafondo. The company reported infrastructure developments in Cajamarca, including the construction of over 400 family reservoirs, 300 kilometers of irrigation canals, and a plan for 12 tubular wells. The company has also planted more than three million trees to support aquifer recharge.
