Water management and climate initiatives in Ecuador and Peru
Overview
In late October 2026, regional efforts to manage water resources and adapt to climate change were highlighted through infrastructure developments and environmental recognition.
In Ecuador, the Chiquicahua dam was inaugurated in the Tungurahua province. The project provides a storage capacity of over 3 million cubic meters to support more than 12,500 families by improving water availability for drinking, irrigation, and ecological flow.
In Peru, the Pillones dam marked its 20th anniversary of operation, serving as a critical component of water management in Arequipa. Additionally, Peru received several Green Awards for various climate and water initiatives. These included the AQUARESTAURA project for rehabilitating ancestral stone canals to recharge watersheds, and the Machu Picchu tourism project for its carbon-neutral status and emission reductions. Newmont Yanacocha also received a Water Responsible Company Seal following infrastructure developments in Cajamarca, such as the construction of irrigation canals and family reservoirs.
