Peru records 697 earthquakes in 2026 amid ongoing seismic activity
Peru has recorded 697 earthquakes so far in 2026, according to data from the National Seismological Center of the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP). A recent 5.2 magnitude tremor occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, September 29, in the Loreto region, with its epicenter located 67 kilometers northeast of Andoas at a depth of 150 kilometers.
Regional data shows that Arequipa has experienced the highest frequency of seismic activity this year with 93 recorded events, followed by Lima (67), Ica (56), and Piura (44). Notable high-magnitude events in 2026 include a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Ayacucho on August 20 and a 5.4 magnitude earthquake in Junín on July 18, the latter of which resulted in six fatalities.
The country's frequent seismic activity is attributed to its location within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone characterized by intense volcanic and tectonic movement. The IGP continues to monitor and report these movements to promote prevention and safety measures.
