Peru records multiple earthquakes along central coast

Peru has experienced multiple seismic events along its coast. On September 1, 2026, a magnitude 3.4 earthquake occurred in the sea, 18 kilometers southwest of Chilca in the Cañete province of Lima. The tremor, which occurred at 10:16 a.m. at a depth of 59 kilometers, was felt with a Mercalli intensity of II in Chilca. No damage or casualties were reported.

This followed a magnitude 4.3 earthquake recorded on August 30, 2026, off the coast of the Ancash region. That tremor occurred at 8:08 p.m. at a depth of 36 kilometers, with an epicenter located 87 kilometers southwest of Samanco. It reached an intensity of II-III in Samanco.

Seismologist César Jiménez Tintaya of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos has noted that the central coast of Peru holds significant accumulated seismic energy dating back to the last megathrust earthquake in 1746. He warned that recent tremors have only released approximately 20 percent of the accumulated energy, suggesting the potential for a future earthquake exceeding magnitude 8.0.
