South America records several minor earthquakes on July 26, 2026
A magnitude‑5.7 quake struck the far south of Chile on 26 July, with its epicentre over 300 km south of Punta Arenas. The tremor was lightly felt in Ushuaia, Argentina, but caused no damage or injuries.
Peru experienced multiple quakes the same day: a 3.4‑magnitude event near Parina in the Puno region, a 3.8‑magnitude shock 15 km southeast of Ilo in Moquegua, and a 3.7‑magnitude tremor 15 km from Atacames in the Esmeraldas province of Ecuador. All were shallow, produced Mercalli intensities of II–III, and resulted in no reported casualties or material loss.
Chile’s national seismological service listed several additional low‑magnitude tremors (3.0‑3.6) across the country, none of which caused noticeable effects. In Peru, authorities continued disaster‑response training, with army troops being taught urban‑search‑and‑rescue techniques by the Civil Defence and the volunteer fire brigade.
Overall, the seismic activity remained low‑impact, but monitoring agencies in Chile, Peru, Argentina, and Ecuador kept the public informed and reiterated safety recommendations.
