Peru reports casualties among citizens fighting for Russia in Ukraine
The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released official figures regarding its citizens involved in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Out of 459 Peruvians who have enlisted in the Russian armed forces, 11 have died, 114 are missing, and 3 have been captured by the Ukrainian army.
In response to these developments, the Peruvian government has managed the repatriation of four citizens who were in vulnerable situations after escaping what they described as forced recruitment. To date, a total of 31 Peruvians have been evacuated from Russia; 28 have returned to Peru, while 3 have chosen to remain in Europe.
Authorities have issued a warning to the public against deceptive job offers, noting that such schemes may be linked to human trafficking networks. The Ministry also reminded citizens that serving in a foreign military requires prior official authorization from the Peruvian government. Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Russian ambassador to Lima to demand precise and updated information regarding the location and status of the missing and deceased nationals.
