Seismic activity reported across Peru and Ecuador

Frequent seismic activity has been reported across Peru and Ecuador during early October 2026. In Peru, the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) has monitored numerous tremors in regions including Lima, Callao, Tumbes, Huánuco, Piura, and La Libertad. A notable 3.7 magnitude earthquake occurred near Callao with a depth of 59 km, which was felt in Lima, particularly in high-rise buildings.

In Ecuador, the Instituto Geofísico reported a 3.8 magnitude earthquake near La Troncal in the Cañar province on October 5. Additionally, the El Oro province experienced multiple tremors, including a 4.5 magnitude event near Machala and a 3.5 magnitude tremor near Piñas.

Experts attribute this high frequency of seismic events to the geological location of both countries within the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the interaction of the Nazca and South American tectonic plates creates constant movement. Authorities, including the head of the IGP, Hernando Tavera, have used these events to remind the public of the importance of emergency preparedness and evacuation plans.
