Peru reports over 1,780 measles cases nationwide

Peru has confirmed more than 1,780 cases of measles nationwide, according to the Ministry of Health (Minsa). The outbreak is heavily concentrated in the southern regions, specifically Puno and Arequipa. In Puno alone, 1,261 cases have been recorded, while Lima has identified 14 cases.

Health officials attribute the spread in the south to the border with Bolivia, which has been experiencing a significant measles outbreak. Additionally, large-scale regional celebrations, such as La Candelaria and the Puno Carnival, along with increased tourism, facilitated the transmission of the highly contagious virus.

In response, Minsa has issued six epidemiological alerts to declare emergencies in several regions, particularly in the south, to intensify vaccination efforts. Health workers are conducting door-to-door visits and expanding vaccination schedules to morning, afternoon, and night shifts to improve access. Officials noted that vaccine hesitancy, driven by misinformation, remains a challenge in completing immunization cycles.
