Peru reports rising school violence in La Libertad and Cusco
Reports from Peru indicate rising concerns regarding violence within educational institutions. In the La Libertad region, the Ministry of Education’s SíseVe platform recorded 530 cases of school violence between January and August 2026. These incidents include 223 cases of physical violence, 213 cases of psychological violence, and 94 cases of sexual violence. The majority of reports originated from public schools, with secondary education seeing the highest frequency of incidents. Approximately 59.81% of these cases involved aggression between students, while 40.19% involved violence committed by school staff against students.
In Cusco, the Local Education Management Unit (UGEL) is investigating three alleged cases of sexual violence in schools. One investigation involves a 14-year-old student at the Gran Unidad Escolar Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, leading to administrative proceedings against four teachers. Another case involves an eight-year-old student at a private institution. Authorities have maintained confidentiality regarding these investigations to protect the identities of the minors involved.
