Peru reports 59% increase in dengue deaths amid El Niño heat

Peru has recorded 81 deaths from dengue in 2026, marking a 59% increase compared to 2025. The Peruvian Ministry of Health attributes this rise to unusually high temperatures linked to the El Niño phenomenon, particularly in Amazonian regions and areas bordering Ecuador where temperatures have exceeded 30 degrees Celsius for several weeks.

In the Piura region, authorities have reported over 14,000 cases and 13 deaths. In response, the Minister of Health, Luis Dyer, launched the ‘Batallón contra el dengue’, a task force of over 120 personnel including inspectors and vaccination brigades, to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and promote immunization.

In Huánuco, cases have risen by 123% compared to the same period in 2025, with 953 cases reported as of October 10. Due to the climate-driven surge, the Peruvian government has issued an epidemiological alert, warning of potential increases in other diseases such as leptospirosis, malaria, measles, and acute diarrhea.
