Peru school parades continue in Arequipa, suspended in Piura

School parades celebrating Peru's 205th Independence Day began on 10 July in Arequipa. Organized by the local UGEL Arequipa Sur, more than 16 primary and secondary institutions marched along Av. La Cultura, with awards to be given to top delegations and a "Campeón de Campeones" competition scheduled for mid‑July, followed by a military parade on 25 July.

In the Piura region, the Regional Education Directorate ordered the cancellation of civic school parades in the districts of Piura, Castilla and Veintiséis de Octubre, citing insufficient safety guarantees. Officials noted deteriorated road conditions, collapsed drainage, traffic congestion, dust, high temperatures and the risk of ultraviolet exposure, as well as possible political demonstrations. UGEL Talara issued preventive measures for schools, while the municipality of Chulucanas, after an initial suspension, confirmed it will hold its parade on 16‑17 July with a contingency plan to protect participants.

Both actions reflect local authorities' efforts to balance traditional celebrations with public‑health and safety concerns.
