Peru and FBI establish cooperation to combat transnational crime

The Peruvian National Police (PNP) and the FBI have established a cooperation agreement to combat transnational organized crime. PNP General Commander Óscar Arriola confirmed that the agreement was signed approximately three and a half months ago during the transition government of José María Balcázar. The partnership aims to dismantle foreign criminal gangs operating within Peru, specifically targeting high-impact crimes such as extortion and contract killings.

The U.S. government will provide technology, logistics, specialized training, and high-level professional assistance to support these operations. U.S. Ambassador Bernie Navarro confirmed the arrival of FBI specialists to reinforce the liaison unit with the PNP. While officials emphasize the strategic alliance, President Keiko Fujimori has stated that no formal agreement with the FBI has been signed yet.

Separately, Peru is facing domestic unrest due to rising fuel prices, leading to protests and transport strikes in regions including Ucayali, Loreto, Arequipa, and Tacna. In response, President Fujimori announced a temporary, targeted subsidy of 15% to 20% for diesel, intended for cargo and passenger transporters, including river and mototaxi operators, to be implemented for three months.
