Peru sees growth in sweet potato and grape exports

Peru is experiencing significant growth in its agricultural export sectors, specifically in sweet potatoes and grapes.

Between January and May 2026, sweet potato exports reached 5,748.7 tonnes, representing a 20.3% increase in volume compared to the same period in 2025. The country supplies 19 different nations, with Chile receiving 52.1% of exports, followed by the Netherlands at 32.9% and the United States at 9.1%. Major production regions include Lambayeque, La Libertad, Áncash, Ica, Arequipa, Tacna, Moquegua, and Lima.

In the 2025/26 fiscal year, grape exports rose by 4% in volume to 86.4 million cartons, valued at approximately $2.072 billion. North America remains the primary market, with the United States accounting for 52% of export volume. The industry is seeing a strategic shift in crop varieties; licensed varieties now cover 85% of certified cultivation areas. Notably, the traditional ‘Red Globe’ variety has seen its share of certified area drop from 48% a decade ago to just 10% today, as growers adopt varieties like ‘Sweet Globe’, ‘Autumn Crisp’, and ‘Allison’ to maintain international competitiveness.
