Peru seismic risk: Experts warn of earthquake vulnerability in Lima and Tacna

Seismic experts in Peru are warning of high vulnerability to large-magnitude earthquakes due to unstable soil and poor construction quality. In Lima, the Peruvian Japanese Center for Seismic Research and Disaster Mitigation (CISMID) has identified eleven districts with unfavorable geological conditions, including Ate, Chorrillos, Comas, Independencia, Carabayllo, San Juan de Lurigancho, Villa El Salvador, Villa María del Triunfo, Ancón, Santa Rosa, and Ventanilla.

Experts note that while some districts like Miraflores and San Isidro sit on more favorable terrain, safety is not guaranteed if buildings are constructed informally. It is estimated that 70% to 80% of structures in the country lack proper engineering. In the event of an 8.8 magnitude earthquake, officials estimate between 4 and 7 million people in Lima and Callao could be affected.

In Tacna, the College of Engineers has raised alarms regarding disordered urban growth and the failure to comply with technical construction norms. Specific areas like Ciudad Nueva and Alto de la Alianza are noted for increased risk due to soil characteristics and inadequate infrastructure.
