Seismic activity and earthquake vulnerability in Peru

Overview

The Piura region in northern Peru recently experienced a series of seismic events, including three consecutive earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.9, 4.0, and 4.1 within a single hour. These tremors originated in the Pacific Ocean near Sechura, but the Peruvian Navy’s Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation confirmed that no tsunami was generated and no casualties or material damages were reported in Piura from these specific maritime movements.

This activity follows a period of significant seismic instability in Peru, including a magnitude 5.4 earthquake in the Junín region that caused a humanitarian crisis, resulting in at least six deaths and the displacement of over 6,400 people.

In response to ongoing risks, experts are warning of high vulnerability to large-magnitude earthquakes across the country. In Lima, the Peruvian Japanese Center for Seismic Research and Disaster Mitigation (CISMID) identified eleven districts with unfavorable geological conditions. Experts estimate that 70% to 80% of structures in Peru lack proper engineering, and officials warn that an 8.8 magnitude earthquake could affect between 4 and 7 million people in the Lima and Callao areas. Similarly, in Tacna, engineers have raised alarms regarding disordered urban growth and non-compliance with construction norms in areas such as Ciudad Nueva and Alto de la Alianza.
