Venezuela workers face police blockades during wage protests
In Venezuela, workers, retirees, and pensioners held demonstrations in Caracas to demand significant wage increases and improved pension benefits. The protesters, representing sectors such as health and education, attempted to march to the Miraflores presidential palace to deliver a list of demands. However, the Bolivarian National Police (PNB) established blockades to prevent the march from reaching the seat of government.
The labor unrest occurs amid high social conflict, with reports indicating a substantial increase in protests throughout the country in 2026. Demands include the restoration of contractual rights, better working conditions, and the payment of year-end bonuses based on real income rather than current low official minimum wages.
In a separate regional development, the Venezuelan opposition has called for global marches on October 17 to demand an official electoral calendar and the release of political prisoners. Meanwhile, in Bolivia, negotiations between the transport sector and the regulatory authority (ATT) regarding interdepartmental fare increases have reached a stalemate, with transport leaders seeking a 45% increase following the removal of diesel subsidies.
