Peru President Keiko Fujimori faces falling approval and education reforms

President Keiko Fujimori of Peru is facing a significant decline in public approval during her first month in office. Multiple surveys indicate a sharp drop in her popularity; Datum reported her approval falling from 60% in August to 42% in September, while an Ipsos poll showed a similar decline from 57% to 42%. Disapproval ratings have also risen, with some polls placing rejection as high as 48% or 49%.

Simultaneously, the administration has announced a major education reform as part of the National Education Plan 2026-2031. Education Minister José Antonio Chang stated the government intends to remove what it deems 'ideological' content from the national curriculum. This includes a review of how the period of political violence between 1980 and 2000 is taught, with the Ministry seeking to replace terms like 'civil war' with 'terrorism' to ensure historical rigor. The plan also includes infrastructure goals, such as building 2,000 new schools and modernizing 3,000 existing ones.
