Perugia suspect arrested after attempted kidnapping of 5‑year‑old

Police responded to an incident at the Fontivegge bus‑stop area in Perugia on Wednesday evening after a mother reported that a man had briefly taken her five‑year‑old daughter from her arms. The woman shouted for help, drawing the attention of nearby passers‑by who called emergency services. Within minutes, State Police officers arrived, identified the suspect from witnesses and CCTV footage, and detained him.

The arrested man, a 29‑year‑old citizen of Gambia who was already known to authorities, was taken to the Perugia police headquarters for questioning. He was charged with aggravated attempted kidnapping of a minor after investigators found photographs of the child on his mobile phone taken during the episode. The suspect remains in custody at the Capanne detention centre pending further judicial proceedings.
