Peru's 2026 Local Elections Reveal Minimal Female Candidates in Ayacucho and Peru Libre's Absence in Junín

In the Ayacucho region, only 45 of the 587 mayoral candidacies for provincial and district municipalities are women, representing just 7.6% of the total. Female participation is 11.5% for provincial mayoralties and 7% for district mayoralties, with six provinces offering only male candidates and no province exceeding 15% female representation.

In the Junín region, the Peru Libre party founded by Vladimir Cerrón submitted no candidates for the 2026 regional, provincial, or district elections. The party’s absence from the ballot threatens its registration, as it may fail to meet the required electoral threshold.
