Peru's apiculture sector reaches 300,000 mechanized beehives

Peru possesses approximately 300,000 mechanized beehives for the production of honey and related derivatives, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI). The apiculture sector integrates more than 40,000 families across various regions, serving as a vital complementary activity to agriculture and a secondary source of income for rural populations.

National honey production is estimated to be between 2,300 and 2,500 tons per year, with an average yield of 10.8 kilograms per hive. Production is spread across diverse ecosystems, including Andean zones, the coast, and dry forests. Key producing regions include Cusco, Cajamarca, Apurímac, Áncash, and La Libertad, as well as Junín, Pasco, San Martín, and Oxapampa. Coastal production is noted in Piura, Lambayeque, and Lima.

Beyond honey, the industry produces and commercializes derivatives such as propolis, pollen, royal jelly, beeswax, and apitoxin. To promote the sector, MIDAGRI has organized initiatives like the Honey Festival (FESTIMIEL 2026) to strengthen competitiveness and connect producers with consumers.
