Peru's Constitutional Court has admitted an unconstitutionality lawsuit filed by the Loreto Bar Association against the extension of the Integral Mining Formalization Registry (Reinfo) and recent changes to the Penal Code regarding illegal mining.

The Loreto Bar Association argues that the Reinfo mechanism, originally intended as a temporary measure for formalization, has been extended for over two decades and now facilitates illegal mining activities. They claim the current extension violates environmental, health, and equality rights, noting increased illegal mining in basins such as the Nanay River, which provides water to Iquitos.

While the lawsuit proceeds, the National Confederation of Small Mining and Artisanal Mining of Peru (Confemin) has been meeting with the Energy and Mines Commission of the Chamber of Deputies to request a further four-year extension of the registry.
