Peru's copper sector eyeing growth as record prices clash with political uncertainty

Record copper prices, now at historic highs, are enhancing the Peruvian sol and promise substantial foreign‑exchange inflows if pending mining projects are brought online. Economist Melvin Escudero notes that Peru’s low production costs, combined with a portfolio of projects worth over US$ 63 billion, could generate hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue and strengthen the currency, though increased imports for new industrial activity may temper a permanent dollar decline.

At the same time, chronic political instability is delaying permits and allowing illegal mining to expand. Peru has slipped from the world’s No. 2 copper producer to third place behind the Democratic Republic of Congo. With a June 7 presidential runoff between Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sánchez, mining firms are calling for greater stability and clearer regulatory rules, warning of potential capital outflows and social conflict if uncertainty persists.
