Peru's Culture Minister denies LUM museum transfer

Peruvian Minister of Culture Alberto Beingolea has denied rumors that the Lugar de la Memoria, la Tolerancia y la Inclusión Social (LUM) will be transferred to the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights. He clarified that there is no official discussion regarding the administration of the museum moving from his sector, noting that all state museums fall under the Directorate of Museums within the Ministry of Culture.

Beingolea addressed recent reorganization proposals from Minister of Justice Ernesto Álvarez, describing them as mere opinions rather than official policy. He dismissed claims of a ministerial conflict, stating the matter was even treated with humor during a recent cabinet meeting.

While ruling out the closure of the LUM, Beingolea stated that the institution requires a review of its operations. He argued that the museum has become a “point of disagreement, disunity, and permanent confrontation among Peruvians” rather than achieving its original goal of reconciliation and forgiveness. He emphasized the need for changes to ensure the institution represents various sectors of society and does not serve a single perspective.
