Peru economy expands 3.7% in April, driven by construction and non‑primary sectors
Peru's gross domestic product grew 3.73 % in April 2026, the strongest monthly expansion this year, according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the National Institute of Statistics. The increase was led by non‑primary activities, with construction output jumping 12.9 % and construction sector production rising 12.88 % in the same month. Commerce, services and manufacturing also posted solid gains, while primary sectors such as mining, hydrocarbons and agriculture fell.
The government highlighted that electricity demand rose 5.5 % in May, the highest rate since February 2024, and imports of capital goods surged 28.2 % nominal, marking 26 consecutive months of growth. Over the past 15 years, mining has generated more than S/115 billion for regional development, and officials stressed the need to streamline permitting to capitalize on the global demand for copper and other critical minerals.
Analysts noted that the robust internal demand and continued private investment underpin the expansion, despite external shocks from El Niño and international uncertainty. The outlook points to continued momentum in construction and non‑primary sectors, while reforms in mining regulation are seen as essential to sustain growth.
