Peru's Election Victory for Keiko Fujimori Sparks Victims' Protest Over Human Rights Concerns

Families of victims of the 2022‑2023 protests in Peru gathered outside the Palace of Justice to denounce the virtual victory of Keiko Fujimori. They warned that her ascent to the presidency would pose a grave threat to human‑rights protections nationwide and criticized alleged irregularities in the counting of overseas votes that gave Fujimori a narrow lead of about 30,000 votes. The Association of Martyrs and Victims highlighted that their relatives were killed during state repression that claimed 49 civilian lives, and they accused the right‑wing Fuerza Popular of enacting laws that shield police and military perpetrators.

An accompanying opinion piece noted that, should Fujimori assume office, she will need to negotiate alliances with parties in Congress—including Fuerza Popular, Renovación Popular and the Partido del Buen Gobierno—to secure a governing majority and address policy areas such as security, health, education, the economy and the upcoming El Niño climate event.
