Peru's export sector drives one‑third of formal jobs as Callao port tops shipment values
Export‑related employment in Peru reached 1.52 million jobs in the June 2025‑May 2026 period, representing 33.1 % of all formal private jobs. Agroindustry and mining accounted for 84.7 % of those jobs, with traditional sectors such as mining and agribusiness seeing the strongest growth. The United States was the leading market, generating 366,597 export‑linked positions, followed by the European Union and China.
During January‑May 2026, the Port of Callao emerged as Peru’s primary export hub, handling USD 14.371 billion in shipments, ahead of Jorge Chávez airport (USD 12.159 billion) and the port of Matarí (USD 5.758 billion). Regional exporters contributed USD 38.977 billion, a 40.6 % increase from the previous year, with interior regions accounting for 86.6 % of total exports. Huánuco posted the highest regional growth, adding USD 196 million.
