Peru's INDECI flags 189 jungle districts at high risk of landslides and floods

The National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) issued an alert that 189 districts in Peru's Amazon region face very high or high risk of landslides, mudflows and other mass movements due to moderate to heavy rains associated with the year's sixth cold spell. The risk map, prepared by the National Center for Estimation, Prevention and Risk Reduction (CENEPRED) following meteorological bulletin No. 274 from SENAMHI, identifies 47 districts at “Very High” risk and 142 at “High” risk, affecting more than 5 million people, 1 778 health facilities and roughly 10 000 schools.

The department of San Martín has the most critically exposed districts (16 very high‑risk), followed by Cajamarca (9), Ayacucho (7), Amazonas (6), Pasco (3), Puno (3), and one each in Cusco, Junín and Loreto. INDECI urged local and regional authorities to clear and mark evacuation routes, ensure the availability of health centers, fire services and police stations, and to help residents reinforce roofs and set up early‑warning systems such as sirens, bells or megaphones. The agency will monitor the situation through the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) and coordinate with regional officials.
