Peru's ONPE Sets New Security Rules and Media Campaign for 2026 Regional Elections
The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) in Peru approved an updated set of security regulations for the upcoming regional and municipal elections scheduled for 4 October 2026. The measures, issued in Resolution JN/ONPE 000109‑2026, mandate strict custody of all electoral material, external surveillance of polling stations by the National Police, and internal security inside voting venues by the Armed Forces. They also prohibit the use of mobile phones, cameras or video equipment inside ballot boxes and grant election officials immunity from detention 24 hours before and after voting, except for flagrante delito cases.
In a separate resolution (JN/ONPE 000111‑2026), ONPE approved a comprehensive media plan to run from 14 September to 4 October 2026. The campaign, coordinated by the Management of Information and Electoral Education, aims to inform citizens, encourage voter participation, promote responsible voting, and ensure respect for official results while maintaining neutrality and educational standards throughout the advertising and informational content.
