Peru's Paracas Coast Sees Thousands of Sea Lions Dead, Prompting Environmental Probe

Authorities in Peru have discovered more than a thousand dead sea lions along the beaches of the Paracas National Reserve in the Ica region. The Ministry of Environment (MINAM) activated monitoring protocols, collected biological samples, and engaged agencies such as SERNANP, SERFOR, SENASA and MINSA to determine the cause. Preliminary hypotheses point to an unusual rise in sea surface temperature—up to three to five degrees Celsius—reducing the availability of anchoveta and other fish, which especially threatens juvenile seals.

Scientists also note a broader fauna die‑off, including seabirds, and are testing the carcasses for avian influenza and other diseases. The public is urged not to touch or feed the animals and to report sightings to SERFOR, the Port Authority, IMARPE or local municipalities. Historical El Niño events in the 1980s and 1990s produced similar wildlife losses, highlighting the link between ocean warming and coastal ecosystem stress.
