Mexico's INE launches new voting credential with 25 security features

The Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) unveiled a new model of the Credencial para Votar, set to be issued from June 2026. The credential incorporates 25 anti‑fraud elements, including an optically variable device over the photo, micro‑texts, UV‑visible inks, high‑security QR codes, tactile reliefs for the visually impaired, and rainbow‑foil printing. Two versions will be produced: type “I” for residents in Mexico and type “J” for citizens living abroad.

The new card adds a mobile application that reads the QR codes on Android and iOS devices, and expands inclusion options by allowing self‑identified gender markers (“H”, “M”, “NB”) as well as indigenous or Afro‑Mexican identification upon request. Existing credentials remain valid while the updated version is rolled out. Carla Humphrey, president of the Federal Voters Registry Commission, said, “Este nuevo modelo es un paso adelante en la construcción de una democracia más sólida, más incluyente y más cercana.”
