Peru's Senamhi issues extreme heat warning for coast and highlands

The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru (Senamhi) warned that the El Niño phenomenon is driving an extreme heat wave across the Peruvian coast and Sierra. Temperatures are forecast to reach up to 36 °C between July 30 and August 1, 2026, with unusually low cloud cover, high ultraviolet radiation and, along the coast, elevated humidity that raises the apparent heat. In the highlands, large daytime‑nighttime temperature differences are expected, affecting agricultural activities.

Health authorities issued a red alert, urging people to limit sun exposure, wear sunscreen, wide‑brimmed hats and UV‑filtering glasses, stay well hydrated, and monitor wind gusts projected at up to 45 km/h. The advisory covers northern, central and southern coastal zones as well as corresponding highland regions.
