illegal mining armed confrontation Madre de Dios Peruvian National Police Los Guardianes de la Pampa

An armed confrontation between the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and the criminal organization 'Los Guardianes de la Pampa' in the Inambari district of Madre de Dios has resulted in the deaths of three suspects and one police officer.

During the early hours of October 6, 2026, specialized units from the PNP engaged the group, which is allegedly involved in illegal mining, extortion, kidnapping, and contract killings. One police officer, identified as Suboficial Joel Ríos Coquinche, was killed, while another, Jack Nima Zota, was seriously injured by gunfire and transported to a regional hospital.

Following the clash, authorities seized a significant arsenal, including 15 long-range war rifles, five grenades, various types of ammunition, and mobile phones. Additionally, two containers suspected of holding mercury, a chemical used in illegal gold extraction, were discovered at the scene. The operation is part of a broader strategy by the Ministry of the Interior to reclaim territorial control and dismantle the firepower of criminal structures operating in the Amazon region.
