Peruvian Congressman Julián Pérez Detained for Assaulting Ex‑Partner

On July 31, congressman Julián Luis Pérez Mallqui of the Juntos por el Perú party was detained at the San Miguel police station in Lima after officers heard a noise and found him striking his former partner, Laura Bonilla Valerio, who had just filed a complaint of psychological violence. The Supreme Family Prosecutor opened a preliminary investigation for assault against a woman and a family member, assigning senior prosecutor Luis Carlos Arce Córdova to the case. He ordered a 15‑hour deadline to complete investigative steps, including statements from officers, witness identification, scene inspection, security‑camera footage review, and parallel medical examinations of both the victim and the detainee. The victim is to receive a psychological evaluation and support from the local Centro de Emergencia Mujer. The Juntos por el Perú parliamentary group said it rejects all forms of violence and will monitor the investigation, while the Multisectorial de Mujeres de Tacna demanded a transparent process without impunity.
