Peru Episcopal Conference warns of scams regarding Pope Leo XIV visit

The Peruvian Episcopal Conference (CEP) has issued an alert regarding fraudulent social media advertisements targeting the faithful ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Peru in November. Scammers are reportedly using the institution’s name, logo, and image to offer fake services, including private meetings, photographs, and blessings with the Pontiff, in exchange for payments of approximately 1,000 soles (about 300 USD).

Monseñor Guillermo Inca Pereda, the general coordinator for the papal visit, clarified that all activities related to the Pope’s stay are free of charge. The CEP has filed a criminal complaint with the Peruvian National Police to track the perpetrators and block the fraudulent bank accounts and messaging numbers being used.

Simultaneously, preparations for the visit are underway. A Vatican advance commission of approximately 40 representatives has arrived in Chiclayo to inspect infrastructure, security, and potential sites for mass celebrations, including Zaña and Pimentel. The Pope is scheduled to visit Lima, Callao, Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa from November 11 to 16.
