Colombia orders nationwide review of traffic enforcement cameras

President Abelardo De La Espriella has ordered a comprehensive review of the traffic enforcement camera system, known as fotomultas, across Colombia. The initiative aims to reform the installation, operation, and notification criteria for these surveillance devices to ensure they prioritize road safety rather than serving as revenue-generating tools.

Minister of Transport Elsa Noguera confirmed that the review will be conducted immediately. The Ministry will coordinate the process alongside the National Road Safety Agency and the Superintendency of Transport. The evaluation will specifically examine technical and legal support, signage, speed limits, camera calibration, and the safety conditions of the locations where the devices are installed. The government seeks to determine which systems comply with established regulations and which require corrective measures to prevent arbitrary fines and protect citizens' rights.
