Peruvian police officers die in separate traffic accidents

Two Peruvian National Police officers have died following separate traffic accidents.

In Nuevo Chimbote, 24-year-old Suboficial Gerson Azaña Quezada died after his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle on the Panamericana Norte highway near the Sahara VIP premises. The impact caused instantaneous death, and authorities have cordoned off the area for investigation.

In the Chala district of Caravelí, Suboficial Gustavo Humpire Portugal of the Highway Police died following an incident during an operation on the Panamericana Sur. According to his sister, the officer was struck by a mototaxi under poor lighting and adverse weather conditions. The driver of the vehicle was detained. The officer's family has requested aerial assistance to transport his body to Arequipa, as heavy rains and road blockages have prevented land transit.
