Deaths of Peruvian National Police officers

Overview

In mid-August 2026, several Peruvian National Police officers died in separate incidents. In Nuevo Chimbote, 24-year-old Suboficial Gerson Azaña Quezada died instantly after his motorcycle was struck on the Panamericana Norte highway. In the Chala district of Caravelí, Suboficial Gustavo Humpire Portugal of the Highway Police was struck by a mototaxi during an operation on the Panamericana Sur; his family noted that poor lighting and adverse weather contributed to the accident, and heavy rains complicated the transport of his body.

On August 18, Suboficial Dangler Pérez Urteaga of the Águilas Negras squadron died from a gunshot wound inside his residence in the Comas district of Lima. While his wife, Helen Rosita Ariza Miñote, claimed the officer shot himself following a physical altercation, his father has challenged the suicide hypothesis and requested a deeper investigation.

On August 30, 21-year-old Diego Manuel Vela Rodríguez of the Trujillo Emergency Unit was found with multiple gunshot wounds, including cranial trauma, near the Mercado de Papas in Trujillo. Preliminary reports suggest he may have been attacked inside his residence and subsequently thrown from an upper floor. Criminal investigators are working to identify the perpetrators and establish a motive.
