Peruvian regional mayors dispute over separate meetings with Keiko Fujimori
Heráclides Ojeda, mayor of Lampa in the Puno region, warned that the lack of coordination among provincial mayors – Javier Ponce of Puno and Óscar Cáceres of San Román – weakens their collective voice. The three officials met Keiko Fujimori on 8 July without prior agreement, prompting Ojeda to call for a single platform to present common demands to the central government.
Senator Moisés Chipana harshly criticized the mayors, stating they are “clinging to Keiko Fujimori to grab some crumbs” and labeling their approach “reckless.” He recalled that a congressional commission to investigate killings under President Dina Boluarte was blocked by the Fujimori‑aligned bloc and noted that both mayors face criminal probes for alleged organized‑crime activities in their municipalities.
