Regional transport upgrades: Wrocław tram expansion and rail modernization
Wrocław is advancing its ‘Wrocław chooses the tram’ project, a major modernization initiative with an estimated total investment of 3 billion PLN. The plan includes the acquisition of up to 160 new trams and the construction of a new depot in Nowe Żerniki, estimated at 1 billion PLN. Local authorities have been consulting residents on desired features such as comfort and accessibility.
In Brașov, Romania, authorities have initiated a market consultation for the purchase of 10 articulated electric buses. These 18-meter vehicles are intended to serve rapidly growing northern neighborhoods like Bartolomeu Nord and Tractorul Nord, where current 12-meter buses are reaching capacity.
In Poland, PKP Intercity has launched a tender for the major overhaul and long-term maintenance of its Pendolino fleet. The modernization aims to update interiors with new upholstery, USB ports, and improved Wi-Fi, alongside implementing the latest ETCS train control systems. Additionally, Koleje Dolnośląskie has doubled its order for new diesel-electric trains from PESA Bydgoszcz, increasing the total to 20 units to serve non-electrified regional lines.
