Pescara health authorities report West Nile Virus case

The ASL of Pescara has reported a new autochthonous case of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection in a 93-year-old resident. The patient is currently receiving daytime hospitalization, and their general condition is reported to be good.

Health authorities noted that while the case is isolated, it serves as a strategic epidemiological indicator of viral circulation among wild bird reservoirs and Culex mosquito populations in the urban and peri-urban areas. The virus is transmitted via mosquito bites and is not spread directly from human to human.

In response, the Municipality of Pescara, in coordination with Ambiente spa and Pescara Multiservice, has activated preventive measures. These include reinforced larvicidal efforts, routine public space disinfection, and targeted treatments for water collection networks, such as drains and ditches. Priority is being given to public parks, green areas, social-care facilities, and hospitals to mitigate the risk of further transmission.
