Pescara municipal merger faces delays amid regional political split
Disagreements have emerged within the regional majority regarding the roadmap for the 'Nuova Pescara' project, which aims to merge the municipalities of Pescara, Spoltore, and Montesilvano.
Regional Council President Lorenzo Sospiri has proposed an amendment to delay the merger process until February 2029, rather than the originally intended date of January 1, 2027. This proposal includes the creation of a merger office composed of managers from the three municipalities, led by a single coordinator appointed by President Marsilio.
However, the proposal has met resistance. Luca De Renzis of Fratelli d’Italia criticized the move as an uncoordinated “fuga in avanti” (flight forward) and expressed frustration with the perceived inertia of local politicians and administrators. The matter is expected to be addressed in the Regional Council next week.
